I feel fortunate every time I get to make a movie. The big, complex productions are great but there's also something to be said for smaller, one-day shoots with a few friends. It feels like getting back to my roots. Last weekend I got to work with Paul Brooks (of Into The Night Motion Pictures) and my long-time collaborator Paul Lyzun (the Pauls) on my next short film, The Fawn. Here's the logline:
After a mysterious ritual, a woman wanders through a dream state searching for clues about what happened to her.
It is a blend of folk horror and cosmic horror, and the most experimental movie I've worked on. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect, cloudy day to set the mood.
The movie stars Chicago actress Nora McKirdie. She was one of the four friends in Paul Brooks' found footage film, Hunting for the Hag last year. In fact, we shot The Fawn at the same location as Hunting for the Hag. It was a vacation trailer in the woods a few miles outside Pontiac, IL.
Thanks to the Pauls for making this happen, Nora McKirdie for making a mess with us, my wife for helping me find the time to shoot, and to all the people who will work on this that I haven't asked yet. :)
I am hoping to have the film done in about two months. I still have a few pick up shots and some cosmic horror experimenting to do. In the meantime, here are a few behind-the-scenes stills...

The Fawn looks very promising, and I agree that there's something special about these smaller projects that you can make with your friends!
